Dramatic 2Q08 Flash Memory Growth In China As Price Declines Continue
September 18, 2008

Flash memory vendors took advantage of the Beijing Olympics to further stimulate demand, as 2Q08 shipments reached 4.9 million, up a very strong 88.1% YOY, while revenues grew to 569 million Yuan, up 11.5% YOY. Flash memory growth was also fueled by increased capacity and durability, along with its inherent portability.

Vendor competition: Aigo still the leader, while multinational Kingston grows dramatically.

In 2Q08, Aigo still leads in China's flash memory market with shipments of over 1.3 million, which accounts for 27% share. Lenovo is closing in with 26.5% share, replacing its traditional markdowns with launches of its Lenovo "Fuwa" and Olympic Torch flash memory products. While China's flash memory market is dominated by domestic Chinese vendors, multinational Kingston grew a dramatic 488.3% YOY with a focus on its IT channel strategy.

Capacities continue to increase.

In 2Q08, 2G flash memory has become the mainstream in China, accounting for 48.7% of the market. As with mobile hard drives, product upgrades and intense vendor competition have further driven down prices, making larger capacities more affordable. However, adding Olympic elements to product has provided differentiation.
