2Q08 Printer Shipments Decline Slightly To 1.94 Million In China August 6, 2008

2Q 2008 represents the first decline for China's printer market after ten consecutive quarters of growth. CCID Consulting's data shows that printer shipments in 2008Q2 reached 1.9 million, down 1.7% YOY. Revenues reached 2.7 billion Yuan, down 0.3% YOY.

The inkjet category showed weakness in 2Q08, with shipments of 1.2 million, down 6.8% YOY, and this contributed to the overall decline of China's printer market. However, laser and dye-sublimation printers grew, driven by demand in China's transportation, manufacturing, government, education and consumer sectors.

Laser printer shipments reached 510.7 thousand, up a strong 110.1% YOY, while dye-sublimation printer shipments reached 13.6 thousand, up 36.5% YOY.

The laser printer category is getting stronger and stronger.

China's inkjet demand is transferring towards laser printers, as laser printer prices continue to decline, offering price performance advantages (as well as color). Enthusiasm for laser printers is on the upswing. Laser printer shipment share increased to 26.3% for 2Q08, compared to only 19% in 2005.

Samsung, OKI and Brother have strong growth.

In 2Q08, Samsung, OKI and Brother had double-digit shipment growth, while leading vendors HP and Canon had slight decreases. Lenovo fared poorly, despite the simulative effects (and sponsorship) of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Lenovo's printer shipments declined 22.1% YOY for the quarter.

Vendor concentration becomes even more pronounced in China.

HP, Epson and Canon accounted for 78.5% of China's printer market in 2Q08, up 2.5% YOY. The top eight vendors accounts for 93.3% of the market. Currently, core printer technologies are dominated by HP, Epson, Canon, Samsung and Brother, as other vendors struggle to get a foothold.
